Moving checklist

A move goes smoother when it's broken into stages instead of one long to-do list. Here's what to handle at each point between now and move day. Check items off as you go, or print a copy to keep on the fridge.

8 weeks before

• Set your move date and start getting quotes.
• Start sorting room by room — decide what's coming, what's being sold or donated, and what needs a junk removal or clearout booking.
• If you're in a condo or apartment, check your building's move-booking requirements now — see our condo moving guide.
• Build a rough inventory with our moving calculator so your quote is accurate.

4 weeks before

• Confirm your move date and crew/truck size with your mover.
• Start packing anything you won't need in the next month — off-season items, books, decor, the garage. See our packing checklist.
• Order packing supplies, or book packing services if you'd rather not do it yourself.
• Arrange time off work for move day if you need it.
• Notify your landlord or start any required strata paperwork for your move-out date.

2 weeks before

• Confirm elevator or loading dock bookings at both addresses.
• Start a change-of-address with the post office, your bank, employer and any subscriptions.
• Arrange to transfer or set up utilities and internet at your new address.
• Keep packing — daily-use items can wait until the final week.
• Begin using up food in your freezer and pantry rather than moving it.

Moving week

• Finish packing everything except what you'll need the morning of the move.
• Label every box by room and a brief note of contents, so unloading is fast.
• Pack a separate "open first" box or bag with medications, chargers, important documents and a change of clothes.
• Confirm arrival time and any last details with your moving crew.

Moving day

• Do a final walk-through of your old home, including closets, cupboards and the garage.
• Keep valuables, documents and the "open first" box with you rather than on the truck.
• Be available to answer questions and point out anything fragile or awkward before loading starts.
• Do a walk-through of the new place as items come off the truck to make sure nothing's missed.
