Packing checklist

Packing goes faster and unpacking goes even faster when you pack in the right order and label as you go. Check items off as you go, or print a copy to work from.

Pack first (things you won't touch for weeks)

Start with whatever you're least likely to need before move day:

• Off-season clothing and sporting gear.
• Books, decor, artwork and anything purely decorative.
• Garage, shed and storage-room items.
• Spare-room and guest-room contents.
• Anything already in storage bins or rarely opened.

Pack last (the final day or two)

Leave these until the day before, or the morning of, the move:

• Kitchen essentials — a few plates, cutlery, a pot, coffee maker.
• Toiletries and daily medications.
• Bedding and towels currently in use.
• Chargers, laptops and anything you're working from until the last minute.
• A change of clothes for the next day or two.

Room-by-room, not room-by-guesswork

It's easy to underestimate how much is actually in a room until you start packing it. Our moving calculator walks through each room with a realistic item list, which doubles as a packing checklist and gives your mover an accurate inventory for your estimate.

Labelling boxes so unloading goes fast

• Label every box with the room it belongs in and a one-line note of what's inside — "Kitchen — pots and pans" is far more useful than "Kitchen" alone.
• Mark anything fragile clearly, and keep fragile boxes light rather than fully packed.
• Number your boxes and keep a simple running list — it makes it obvious if something goes missing between the old place and the new one.
• Pack and clearly mark one "open first" box per household with essentials for the first night, so it doesn't get buried under everything else.
